Since a couple of my followers and foreign friends have been asking me to write some posts in English, I will try and give it a shot. But hey, don’t shoot me if not every sentence is grammatically well-formed. 😊
I have been studying a lot lately and one of the topics for which I have grown special interest is the influence on low carb vs low fat dieting on your body and general well-being. As some of you might already know, I am one of those persons suffering from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). One of the things that helped me a lot already is focusing on zero-lactose. However, some negative effects never seemed to be entirely gone. When I was studying for our Bayesian bodybuilding course last night, I read that not only lactose but also gluten sensitivity is one of the main causes for IBS. It made me realise that it is indeed a fact that I feel less good after having eaten a larger amount of carbs, especially bread. And let it be wheat and other cereals that are the products containing a lot of gluten. So, for me this is the first reason why I want to try to lower my carb intake (i.e. wheat and other cereals) in my diet. At this point I have to say I eat a LOT of carbs, both fast and slow carbs, so this will be a real challenge. I am however VERY motivated so let’s give it a try!
Another reason to lower my carb intake would be insulin sensitivity.
A little scientific explanation (which you can skip if you want ;-)) :
“When people eat food containing carbohydrates, the digestive system breaks down the digestible ones into sugar, which enters the blood. As blood sugar levels rise, the pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that prompts cells to absorb blood sugar for energy or storage.”*
So, if you eat a lot of carbohydrates and you don’t use the sugars entering your blood by being physically active, insulin will be produced and will store those sugars => BODY FAT.
“Insulin sensitivity describes how sensitive the body is to the effects of insulin. Someone said to be insulin sensitive will require smaller amounts of insulin to lower blood glucose levels than someone who has low sensitivity.”*
So, the key is trying to become as highly sensitive to insulin as possible. The more insulin there is in your blood, the less fat you can burn. This means that when you eat a lot of fast sugars during the day (e.g. white bread, pasta, chocolate, all kinds of cookies and candies, etc.) your body will produce insulin several times a day (and will always need more and more and more insulin to get rid of the sugars in your blood). And insulin in your blood means you’re not capable of burning fat at that moment.
This is why you don’t want too much insulin in your blood.
Side note : complex carbohydrates (slow carbs) can provide your body with energy over an extended period of time without a rapid elevation in blood sugar. So, you will need less insulin to digest these slow carbs. Which makes slow carbs in fact a LOT better than fast carbs (in normal circumstances).
I ABSOLUTELY don’t want to conclude that all carbs are bad. Some carbs can in fact be very healthy. Latest research has indicated that also different kinds of fats are very healthy (I will be writing about this in another blogpost). The reason I want to try a low-carb high-fat diet is to see which effect it may have for my gut and to check if I feel overall more energetic.
